Shocks and struts perform two important functions; dampen the bounce in the springs and help control your car. Imagine if your car bounced uncontrollably on the springs every time you hit a bump, pot hole or turned a corner. Not a pretty scene!
Shocks and struts are different. Some cars have one or the other, or a combination of both.
Replacing them isn’t cheap. You may think it’s ok to avoid changing them. I’m here to recommend that you don’t.
Following are some signs that it’s time to change your shocks and/or struts
Steering wheel vibration not caused by tire balance/maintenance
When the shocks and struts responsible for holding you to the road are defective, they usually start to produce a constant wobble wheel. Your vehicle behaves different; inaccurate and unstable. This is usually the first sign.
Roll and Sideslip
It’s hard to maintain control of your vehicle when driving curves and swerves in the road. You will experience a rolling effect due to lateral displacement created by a loss of vehicle heading. In other words, your vehicle points a few degrees different than your tires due to a weak suspension system.
Aquaplaning is caused by poor adhesion to the roadway on wet pavement. If your tires are in good shape, aquaplaning can occur because your suspension isn’t doing its job holding the tires firmly and flatly to the roadway.
Tire wear and increased braking distance
You will notice that your tires are wearing uneven and it takes you longer to stop. The tire bounces and jumps when braking, losing contact with the asphalt.
Nose dives with braking, Back end drops when accelerating
Every vehicle manufacture has different specs but you will find most experts recommend replacing shocks and struts on a car every 60,000-100,000 miles. Tests have shown that original equipment shocks and struts degrade measurably by 60,000 miles. If you are experiencing any of these problems, replacing the worn parts wil significantly improve handling, comfort and most importantly your safety.
